Anxiety is anticipation of future threat or stressful event. Occasional anxiety is a typical, expected part of life that we all experience at various times in our lives. For example, you might feel anxious when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or when making important decisions. Unlike typical feelings of anxiousness, an Anxiety Disorder is more than just temporary worry or fear, as the anxiety does not ease and can even become more intense as time goes on. The symptoms of Anxiety Disorder can interfere with every-day activities at work or school, and in relationships with others. There are several types of Anxiety Disorders, including generalized anxiety, panic disorder, separation anxiety, and various phobia-related disorders.
With one type, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, the individual experiences excessive, persistent anxiety and may worry about a number of activities, such as work or school performance. The intensity, duration, or frequency of the anxiety, and worry is out of proportion to the actual likelihood, or impact of the anticipated event. The worry is difficult to control, with the worrisome thoughts interfering with attention to daily living.
Symptoms may include feeling wound-up or on-edge, fatigue, problems with sleep, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and muscle tension.
Treatment
Anxiety disorders are generally addressed through individual therapy, with parents and family actively participating for children and youth experiencing an Anxiety Disorder.
Medication is sometimes prescribed as an additional aid in reducing symptoms of anxiety or panic attacks. At Comprehensive Healthcare, our clients work with their treatment staff to understand their diagnosis and develop an effective treatment plan. If you think you or a loved one might have an anxiety disorder, talk to your primary care provider, or contact us to schedule an assessment and become enrolled into services. We want you to live your life to the fullest, to be successful at work or school, and have meaningful relationships. We provide treatment for anxiety disorders at all of our outpatient locations.
