Senior adults are valued and loved members of our society. Changes in our bodies as we age can be numerous, and they can compound or have implications in our ability to be social and on our psychological well-being, which has a direct and proven impact on our biopsychosocial health—and really, our mental health.

 

Aging adults also have other factors impacting our mental health:

  • 20% of people over 55 have a behavioral health problem that results in distress and dysfunction.

  • 25% of older adults have a diagnosable behavioral health problem (usually a mood or anxiety disorder).

  • 66% of elderly people with a diagnosable behavioral health disorder are not receiving services.

The older adult population also experiences the second highest rate of suicide. Risk factors include pain, substance use disorder, and isolation. Older adults with an untreated behavioral health disorder are more likely to smoke and abuse substances, and are less likely to eat healthy, and exercise.

Normal aging involves a decline in functioning, sensory, and physical abilities; but it does not include illness, disease, and behavioral health disorders. Behavioral health disorders are not a normal part of aging, and they are treatable.
