(August 17, 2022 – Yakima, WA) – Did you know there are over 1.8 million nonprofit organizations in the U.S. according to causeiq.com? According to John Hopkins University, if nonprofits were a country, they would be the 5th largest country in the world.
It’s no surprise then that there is a day dedicated to the recognition and celebration of the nonprofit sector.
National Nonprofit Day was founded by Sherita J. Herring, a speaker, author, and business strategist. Her hope was that this day would enlighten, empower, and make a difference to those that work in the trenches of nonprofit care. The Tariff Act was signed into law on August 17th and this law imposed income tax on corporations but gave exemptions to nonprofit corporations and charitable organizations. Thus, she suggested August 17th became the day of celebration for nonprofits and that was officially recognized and declared in 2017.
It’s important to acknowledge that the key to any nonprofit success in helping others, is their staff. The individuals within an agency are its backbone and generally, those in nonprofit organizations have hearts and minds that see the best and want the best for the communities they serve.
“We are blessed with amazing staff at Comprehensive Healthcare,” said Jodi Daly, PhD, President and CEO. “Their hearts are big, and they recognize that giving back through other nonprofit organizations in terms of their time, money, or other resources can have profound impacts not only on the populations we serve within our agency but overall, throughout the communities we live, work, and play in. It always brings a smile to hear how our employees spend their off time supporting agencies near and dear to their own hearts.”
Nonprofit agencies tackle some of societies toughest challenges, their main purpose being to benefit community welfare. They make tangible efforts on both the humanitarian and the environmental front. Nonprofits assist with community gap analysis, connecting people to the community, and raising awareness. Every sector in our society benefits from the work nonprofit organizations do.
“We, at Comprehensive Healthcare, applaud all nonprofits out there that are making a difference, which in turn makes our communities healthy, thriving, and vibrant,” Daly said. “In addition to our staff, Comprehensive Healthcare is thankful to our volunteers which include our board members,” Daly continued. “There are so many different ways people can serve and volunteering their time to help steer and guide our organization is another key to our success.”
Volunteers play a key role in many nonprofits and can help shape and guide the future of communities in unique ways.
“Helping shape a nonprofits organization’s mission and strategy and knowing there is a direct positive impact to our community and the people we serve, is of great personal and professional pride,” said Taylor Stormo, Board Chair of Comprehensive Healthcare which is a volunteer position for the agency.
Whether you’re a paid employee, volunteer, or community member that supports a nonprofit in other ways such as through donations, today is a day to acknowledge and thank you for helping create better quality of life for those in the community.
As we approach National Nonprofit Day, take a moment to thank those that work in this sector. A note or even a shout out on social media can go a long way to encourage someone that’s working hard to make the world we all live in a much better place.
